CHANCE and its members, together with DeMains Libres, are deeply shocked by the homicide of Mohamed Mehdi Kessaci, 20 years old, younger brother of anti-mafia activist and local politician Amine Kessaci, murdered in front of the family home in Marseille, France, on 13 November 2025.

Amine Kessaci has long been committed to raising awareness among young people in the neighbourhoods of Marseille, countering the fascination for criminal careers. Due to repeated threats from local mafia groups, he has been under police protection since September 2025.

In 2020, his eldest brother, Brahmi, was killed in connection with criminal activities. The trial of those accused of that homicide is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

We express our closeness, solidarity and full support to Amine Kessaci, his family, and his organisation Conscience. We strongly condemn all forms of intimidation and violence against civil society actors engaged in the struggle against organised crime.

The criminal and mafia phenomenon in Europe exists and persists. We cannot look away from the victims, it continues to claim. They must be placed at the centre of our agendas, not confined to chapters solely focused on repression or enforcement.

We call on French and European authorities to ensure adequate protection for witnesses, victims, and civil society representatives who are threatened by organised crime.

At this difficult time, we reaffirm our shared responsibility to build safer and more just communities, where no life is taken by criminal violence and no family is left alone in grief. Our thoughts and solidarity go to the Kessaci family and to the families of all innocent victims of organised crime. May their stories continue to inspire our collective commitment to stand together, resist fear, and work for change.
