The CHANCE Network stands in solidarity with the family of Daphne Caruana Galizia, with our member organisation Repubblika, and with all those in Maltese civil society who continue to seek truth, accountability and reform following her assassination.

We respect the verdict delivered by the jury in the trial of Yorgen Fenech. But an acquittal in one criminal trial cannot bring Malta’s reckoning with Daphne’s assassination to an end.

Nearly nine years after a journalist was murdered for her work, fundamental questions of accountability remain unresolved. The findings of Malta’s independent Public Inquiry, including its conclusion that the State created a culture of impunity in which the assassination became possible, remain unanswered by the reforms they demanded.

CHANCE therefore joins international press freedom organisations in calling on the Maltese authorities to renew their commitment to accountability, the protection of journalists, the fight against corruption and organised crime, and the full implementation of the Public Inquiry’s recommendations.

Daphne’s family and Malta’s courageous journalists and civil society activists should not have to carry this burden alone. Across Europe, we stand with them.
