Stakeholders: Mobilising citizens as stakeholders in the protection of the rule of law in Europe is a European project that aims to strengthen democratic participation by encouraging more direct involvement of citizens and civil society organisations in the European Union’s rule of law review mechanism.
The project was launched to address a clear shortcoming: despite the European Commission’s openness to civic contributions in the context of the annual reports on the rule of law, participation remains limited, uneven and often restricted to highly specialised actors.
Objectives
Stakeholders aims to make the process more accessible, understandable and relevant to a wider audience, with a particular focus on:
- civil society organisations
- young people
- under-represented communities
Through training and support activities, the project provides practical tools to strengthen the capacity of individuals to contribute to European decision-making processes, improving the quality of civic contributions and the transparency of democratic mechanisms.
Activities
The project is being implemented across seven European countries, bringing together partners with expertise in anti-corruption, civic education, public policy and grassroots mobilisation. The following are planned:
- training programmes on the rule of law and European mechanisms
- national civic conferences
- communication and awareness-raising campaigns
- collaborative platforms for the exchange of experiences
Particular emphasis is placed on opportunities for discussion and co-creation: the national conferences provide a forum for dialogue between citizens, civil society, journalists and experts on issues relating to the rule of law.
The contributions gathered will feed into a shared European process, leading to the formulation of a joint proposal from civil society at a transnational level.
Impact
The project contributes to building a more participatory and resilient European democracy, promoting the transition of citizens from observers to active protagonists in the protection of the rule of law.
